Committee Mailing List

Emailing ubes-committee@bris.ac.uk will email every member of the committee, and someone will no doubt get back to you shortly.

If all this fails...

You can subscribe yourself by emailing majordomo@bris.ac.uk with a blank subject and blank message apart from the line 'subscribe ubes-announce'.

Or send an email to gc6480@bristol.ac.uk, because the only reason this might fail is if I put the information up on this website incorrectly.

Sorry for the slight delay in the weekly email, I have only just managed =
to calm myself down enough to type after all the fun from the Ceilidh =
last Friday! Hope everyone that came had as much fun as I did! But fear =
not we got loads more planned for the next couple of weeks so read on:
1) UBES Navigation Training Day (Sunday 18th) -Signup this Wednesday
2) Paintballing (Saturday 17th) - Signup this Wednesday
3) Summer Expeditions and Training Subsidies Talk - 8pm THIS WEDNESDAY
4) UBESwear
5) UBU AGM
6) ADVANCE WARNING - Oceana Social NEXT MONDAY
7) Pub and Climbing=20
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1) UBES Navigation Training Day (Sunday 18th)
We will be running a one day navigation and group leadership course on =
Sunday 18th February for anyone interested in learning how to navigate =
on the hills or lead groups. The course is EXTREMELY practical based and =
mostly spent in the Brecon Beacons teaching you skills to build upon =
your previous experience. This could include: basic nav, map work, =
contours, timings, pacings, group leadership skills, emergency =
situations, difficult terrain, managing people, route planning & =
finding, kit, weather, logbooks, getting lost etc etc=85 You will be =
taught by experienced and qualified mountain leaders from within UBES. =
The day runs from 9:30am until late at night including a night-nav =
exercise after a hearty evening meal and classroom session.=20
Total cost, just =A320. You even get a certificate at the end! We run =
the course on a maximum 4:1 ratio so there are just 16 places!=20
Signup on WEDNESDAY 7th (this week) @ 1PM outside the UBU Info Point.
This course is specifically designed for UBES to both train our future =
group leaders and to allow people of any ability to spend a day learning =
nav & group leadership skills from someone more experienced.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
2) Paintballing (Saturday 17th)
Want a chance to shoot your favourite member of the committee and have a =
super fun day out? Look no further. A week on Saturday we will be =
heading to the nearby forests for a different type of outdoor adventure, =
Paintball. For only =A310 UBES can get you entry for the full day and =
100 free paintballs (You will probably need to buy some more there). It =
will be a full day leaving at 8ish and getting back by 5. You will also =
need to chip in for transport there but so long as there are a few =
drivers it shouldn't be more than a few pounds. On Wednesday at 1pm =
outside the UBU Info Point you will need to bring =A310 deposit to pay =
for the day and sign up. If you can't make it email Ellie on =
ew0596@bristol.ac.uk.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) Summer Expeditions and Training Subsidies Talk - 8pm THIS WEDNESDAY
THIS WEDNESDAY at 8pm in The Clifton (located here =
http://tinyurl.com/7x69oeg) at 8pm we have our summer trips and =
subsidies talk. I know it seems super weird to be thinking about summer =
already but it is much more fun than thinking about work and we need to =
get planning! Last summer we went off to Spain and Sweden during the =
summer so come along to find out what exiting plans the expeditions =
officers have planned for this summer and I assure you they are pretty =
exciting. We will also be letting you know about some of the training =
courses that we can provide subsidies for and how to apply for them so =
make sure you turn up to hear all about it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4) UBESwear
Please see the email that was sent around yesterday for details about =
how to order your UBESwear. Just make sure you head over on Wednesday to =
secure your stash!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5) UBU AGM
It's the Union Annual AGM this Thursday! Everyone gets the afternoon off =
Uni so there is no excuse not to come and there are quite a few issues =
that affect what the Union will do and can affect societies like us! =
Quite a lot of the committee will be going and will be be splitting our =
time between Bar 100 and the AGM so should be a lot of fun.=20
-----------------------------------------------------------------
6) ADVANCE WARNING - Oceana Social NEXT MONDAY
Next Monday we will be heading off to Oceana for a night of fun filled =
cheesy music! Regardless of what the Freshers say Oceana is by far the =
best Monday night out in Bristol and with a light up, flashing dance =
floor who can say no! There is also talk of a Hooters =
All-You-Can-Eat-Wings session before but there will be another email =
later on this week to confirm. Just make sure you keep the evening free =
and, if you are anything like me, write off Tuesday morning!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
7) Pub and Climbing
We will be heading back to UCR this week as usual. Meet at 1pm outside =
the UBU Info Point and then we will head down.
This Wednesday we will be going to THE CLIFTON for the summer trips and =
subsidies talks so don't go to the vaults! We will probably head to Bar =
100 in the Union after the talks for some cheap, cheap drinking!
------------------------------------------------------
See you soon and since Valentines day is coming up you should take a =
look at this, http://youtu.be/XzyvLf0V3qs, about how not to do it!

LSR4 on the 4th Floor of the Union and there will be a professional band =
ready to teach you the moves to become pro-folk dancers!! We will be =
meeting from 7pm in Bar 100 and then heading up for the Ceilidh to start =
at 8pm, it will finish at 11pm and will probably be followed by some =
Triangle-based late night entertainment! This is not a social to miss =
out on so make sure you get your ticket. They are only =A35 and are to =
cover the cost of the band, you can pick them up outside the UBU Info =
Point at 1pm everyday this week (Tuesday-Friday) or at the Highbury =
Vaults on Wednesday evening. Feel free to bring flatmates/friends/plus =
ones/friends with benefits.=20
-----------------------------------------------------------------
2) Snowdonia Backpacking
So in a week and a half (11-12th Feb) we'll be venturing out into the =
wilds with nothing but grit, determination and electrolytes for a full =
weekend of wintry fun (and tents/food/alcohol etc, but shh...). =
Depending on the weather we could be camping in the snow! Woop! We will =
be leaving as usual on Friday evening and getting back on the Sunday =
evening and camping for both nights, although the first night will be in =
a campsite. You will need normal kit for a UBES Kit but decent boots, =
sleeping bag and a roll mat are a must! Signup will be this Wednesday at =
1pm outside the UBU Info Point and you need to bring your =A340 to pay =
for the trip. Any questions email Martha (mw8930@bristol.ac.uk) or Amy =
(am9202@bristol.ac.uk).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) First Aid Course (VERY LAST CHANCE - ONLY 1 PLACE LEFT!)
We are organising a 2 day emergency first aid course for this weekend =
and there is still one space left. For more info please see the previous =
emails or email Louise on lp9462@bristol.ac.uk, also if you want to come =
then email Louise ASAP!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) UBESwear
The designs are in for the 2011/12 UBESwear and on the Facebook page =
(www.facebook.com/bristolexpeditions). and 'Like' your favourite design =
(on.fb.me/yFShgi). The design with the most votes will be on the =
UBESwear which will go on sale from next week! Details will go out next =
week about how to purchase your UBESwear or exciting new Buffs!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) UBES Sport
A few years ago UBES used to partake in some very casual 5-a-side =
football games and there has been some interest in starting this up =
again although indoor hockey has also been suggested. if you are vaguely =
interested in getting involved in this then drop Cat and email on =
co8242@bristol.ac.uk. PS. It doesn't matter how rubbish/good you are, =
it's the taking part that counts!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
6) Lake Bagging
The annual competition of UBES Lake Bagging is now in full swing. For =
full details please see http://www.ubes.org/pages/funstuff/lakebagging. =
We need to create this year's leaderboard so if you have bagged any =
lakes on UBES Trips since Snowdonia I last October please record them on =
this form (http://bit.ly/xhNhMJ). Please only record Lakes that fall =
within the rules!! Anyone trying to slip in any lakes that do not fulfil =
the criteria or they just haven't done at all will be made to naked lake =
bag the Victoria Rooms Fountains at 9am on a day of my choosing!!! You =
have been warned!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4) UBES Volunteering and Helping
We are looking at getting involved with some volunteering in schools and =
youth groups. It won't require a regular commitment and should be pretty =
good fun. If you are interested drop me an email on =
ms9464@bristol.ac.uk.
The committee/esteemed run most of the trips throughout the year but =
this is YOUR chance to get involved. If you fancy running a trip with a =
member of the committee then we are looking for people to help run the =
Yorkshire 3 Peaks and Cader Idris Trips this term. It doesn't require =
too much work just a bit of preparation before the trip such as ordering =
the food and then helping out on the trip. This looks great on your CV =
and could help you decide if you want to get more involved with the =
society next year (Hint, Hint be on the Committee)!! If you are =
interested drop me an email.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5) Pub and Climbing
We will be heading back to UCR this week as usual. Meet at 1pm outside =
the UBU Info Point and then we will head down.
HIGHBURY VAULTS as usual for the pub on Wednesday!! We will be there =
from 9pm-ish and will probably be in the garden at the back so come =
along and join us for a chat and a pint and find out which committee =
member drank a bit too much in the Lake District and couldn't handle the =
car drive to the walk on the Sunday without a slightly less than =
tactical TC!
------------------------------------------------------
See you on Friday, if not before, and after all the snow in the Lake =
District last weekend you might want to be thankful that at least you =
didn't do this http://youtu.be/heSwlKEh3KU!

UBESwear which will go on sale from next week! Details will go out next =
week about how to purchase your UBESwear or exciting new =
Buffs!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

3) UBES =
Sport

A few years ago UBES used to partake =
in some very casual 5-a-side football games and there has been some =
interest in starting this up again although indoor hockey has also been =
suggested. if you are vaguely interested in getting involved in this =
then drop Cat and email on co8242@bristol.ac.uk. PS. It =
doesn't matter how rubbish/good you are, it's the taking part that =
counts!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------=

6) Lake =
Bagging

The annual competition of UBES Lake Bagging is now in full =
swing. For full details please see http://www.ubes.or=
g/pages/funstuff/lakebagging. We need to create this year's =
leaderboard so if you have bagged any lakes on UBES Trips since =
Snowdonia I last October please record them on this form (http://bit.ly/xhNhMJ). Please only =
record Lakes that fall within the rules!! Anyone trying to slip in any =
lakes that do not fulfil the criteria or they just haven't done at all =
will be made to naked lake bag the Victoria Rooms Fountains at 9am on a =
day of my choosing!!! You have been warned!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------=

4) UBES Volunteering =
and Helping

We are =
looking at getting involved with some volunteering in schools and youth =
groups. It won't require a regular commitment and should be pretty good =
fun. If you are interested drop me an email on ms9464@bristol.ac.uk.

The committee/esteemed run most of =
the trips throughout the year but this is YOUR chance to get involved. =
If you fancy running a trip with a member of the committee then we are =
looking for people to help run the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and Cader Idris =
Trips this term. It doesn't require too much work just a bit of =
preparation before the trip such as ordering the food and then helping =
out on the trip. This looks great on your CV and could help you decide =
if you want to get more involved with the society next year (Hint, Hint =
be on the Committee)!! If you are interested drop me an =
email.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

5) Pub =
and Climbing

We will be heading =
back to UCR this week as usual. Meet at 1pm outside the UBU Info Point =
and then we will head down.

HIGHBURY VAULTS as usual =
for the pub on Wednesday!! We will be there from 9pm-ish and will =
probably be in the garden at the back so come along and join us for a =
chat and a pint and find out which committee member drank a bit too much =
in the Lake District and couldn't handle the car drive to the walk on =
the Sunday without a slightly less than tactical TC!

------------------------------------------------------

See you on Friday, if not before, and after all the snow in the =
Lake District last weekend you might want to be thankful that at least =
you didn't do this http://youtu.be/heSwlKEh3KU!

1) Threlkeld Trip Signup (This Wednesday)
Every year at the end of January, UBES descend on the lovely village of =
Threlkeld in the Lake District for a weekend of wintery =
walking/scrambling/climbing. This is set to be a big trip, with two days =
of frolicking in snowy mountains (weather permitting!), and all the =
normal UBES fun you know and love. If you haven't been on a trip before, =
this is also a great place to start!
The trip will be taking place on the weekend of the 27th-29th January, =
and we will be driving up on the Friday evening and returning late on =
the Sunday. The cost of the trip is =A340 which includes transport, =

it to the Lakes, the cost is =A330 and we will be VERY grateful for your =
help!=20
Sign up is at 1pm Wednesday outside the UBU Info Point/Careers Service =
on Tyndall Avenue. Bring the cash/cheque with you for the cost of the =
trip to confirm your place! Any questions, email Louise (lp9462) or Cat =
(co8242).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
2) Social (This Saturday)
Since we don't have a trip this weekend we will be hitting on Bristol =
Town!! We will be meeting at 9pm at Greenhouse (bar at the bottom of =
Park Street) and then moving on to Thelka/Reflex later on in the evening =
for some old skool fun! What's more NO fancy dress or pre-booking is =
need just turn up and have a good time so there are no excuses not to =
come; lets face it you can always watch Take Me Out on ITV On Demand!! =
See you there! PS. You can pick up your Ceilidh tickets here as well. =
Any questions email Fiona (fc0677) or Ellie (ew0596).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) UBESwear
As per the previous emails we need a design for our 2011/12 Hoodies. The =
designs need to be in by MIDNIGHT THIS SUNDAY so keep sending in your =
designs to Louise (lp9462@bris.ac.uk)! Once we've got them all in we =
will have a vote to decide which one goes on the hoodies! Any questions =
email Louise.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4) CEILIDH!!! (3rd Feb) - PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY!=20
Its that time of year again when to beat off the post-Christmas blues =
UBES holds its annual Ceilidh!! If you have no idea what this is then it =
is a fun filled night of tartan and scottish dancing!! Its held in the =
evening in the Union and we have a professional band and caller who will =
teach you all the dances as we go along so that you are massively clued =
up on "Stripping the Willow" by the end! Its an amazingly fun filled =
night and even if you are like me and have two (or three!) left feet =
then I'm sure a few light beverages will encourage you to get your =
dancing shoes on! Feel free to bring along a plus 1 or 2 or 3!!=20
Tickets are =A35 to cover the cost of the band and will be on sale from =
this Wednesday at the Info Point or at the Pub in the evening!!! Any =
questions email Fiona (fc0677) or Ellie (ew0596).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

please bring a =A320 deposit to the UBU info point on Tyndall Avenue at =
1pm WEDNESDAY! For more info, email Louise on lp9462.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
6) Pub and Climbing
This Wednesday a showing of the Reel Rock Film Tour 2011 is being hosted =
by Wilderness Lectures at the chemistry lecture theatre. Show starts at =
7.30pm and tickets are available from TCA (=A37) or on the door (=A37.50).=
Tickets to the Film also include an afternoons climbing at TCA (The =
Climbing Academy). So on Wednesday a few of us will be going climbing in =
TCA (a short cycle or a usually free train) rather than UCR (the normal =
place in the church!). Meet usual time 1pm Wednesday at the Info Point =
and we will cycle/take the train/bus.
This Wednesday, back by popular demand, we will be going to the HIGHBURY =
VAULTS for our pub night!! In case you don't know where it is, the pub =
is right next to the Co-op on St. Michaels Hill. Some of us will =
probably head there straight after the Reel Rock Tour Film so should =
definitely be there by 9.30pm. We will probably be sitting in the garden =
at the back so bring a warm jumper and come and find us for a friendly =
chat over a pint.

you want to confirm a space, please bring a =A320 deposit to the UBU info =
point on Tyndall Avenue at 1pm WEDNESDAY! For more info, email =
Louise on lp9462.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
6) Pub and Climbing

This Wednesday a showing of the Reel Rock Film Tour 2011 is =
being hosted by Wilderness Lectures at the chemistry lecture =
theatre. Show starts at =
7.30pm and tickets are available from TCA (=A37) or on the door =
(=A37.50). Tickets to the Film also include an afternoons climbing at =
TCA (The Climbing Academy). So on Wednesday a few of us will be =
going climbing in TCA (a short cycle or a usually free train) rather =
than UCR (the normal place in the church!). Meet usual time 1pm =
Wednesday at the Info Point and we will cycle/take the =
train/bus.

This Wednesday, back by popular demand, =
we will be going to the HIGHBURY VAULTS for our pub night!! In case you =
don't know where it is, the pub is right next to the Co-op on St. =
Michaels Hill. Some of us will probably head there straight after the =
Reel Rock Tour Film so should definitely be there by 9.30pm. We will =
probably be sitting in the garden at the back so bring a warm jumper and =
come and find us for a friendly chat over a pint.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
See you soon and if you are debating coming on Wednesday then =
have a look at this to get you in the mood http://youtu.be/L35qBS7XqvI,

Greetings Earthlings,

In a week and a half's time UBES will be blasting off to the Mendips =
Hills for our annual pre-Christmas funday of extreme fun, frollicks, =
fancy dress, games, mud and MASSIVE Partying. The theme of the day this =
year is Aliens vs Spacemen!

The plan is to meet on the morning of Saturday 3rd December at the Union =
and then we will head off to the Mendips where everyone will take part =
in some amazing, fun team based challenges run by the committee. Then we =
head back to Bristol in the evening and then everyone heads back home =
and cleans up before we head over to my house for a black tie house =
party!

If you are worried that there aren't many details here then don't worry =
as it is meant to be a surprise but I guarantee it will be fun, just ask =
anyone that has been before! Also don't worry if you haven't been on =
anything UBES related before as there will be loads of people in the =
same boat and its a great way to get to know everyone before coming on a =
trip so make sure you get involved.

The cost of the most epic UBES event of the year is a mere =A310 which =
covers transport and a HUGE amount of free alcohol at the house party in =
the evening. Signup will be tomorrow at 1pm outside the UBU Info Point =
(next to the careers service) and please bring your =A310 with you. If =
you have a valid reason why you can't make it to signup but still want =
to come then drop me an email and we can sort something out.

Also if you are planning on coming to the Kit Night next Monday evening =
(20% off at Cotswold Outdoors) can you please email Jimmy on =
jy0701@bristol.ac.uk so he knows how many people to expect.

If you have any questions drop us an email,
