Subject: HUGE end of term social!!!
We know its been a while but do not fear, we haven't abandoned you! We
were merely building up your excitement for the big event which is...
SCAV-HUNT-BBQ-SPORTSDAY-MEGA-EXTREME-WEEKEND!!
What the bleedin hecks that, I hear you cry? Well...
What? SCAVANGER HUNT; you get given a list of tasks to do and do as many
as possible in 24hours to get the most points.
When? Next weekend, from 12:00 on Sat 5th until 12:00 on Sun 6th.
Where? Meet at Spoons at 11.45 (The Berkeley, on the triangle)
To get involved, get into teams of 3 or 4 or come along and find people
on the day. You obviously don't have to spend the whole time doing it
and if you're unfortunate enough to still have exams, it could be a tame
revision break.... We will also have a special theme, find out more
nearer the time...
THEN...
After the Scav Hunt we're having our big END-OF-YEAR-BBQ and SPORTS DAY!
When? 2:00pm Sun 6th
Where? On the Downs by the observatory (on the right just before
crossing the suspension bridge)
This is our official end of year social so we want everyone there,
whether you're in the pub every week or have never been to a social! It
may even be the last time you see some of us... aka Cat O :( There will be
a bbq, for which we'll provide the bbq's and all bbq food except the
meat, which you guys can bring yourself! There'll also be drinks, games,
an awards ceremony and much much more...
By the way, if the weathers bad... we'll carry on regardless in true
UBES style...
Hope lots of you get involved in the Scav hunt and everyone comes to the
BBQ!

Hello everyone,
Its Bank Holiday weekend this weekend, which can mean only one thing -
its time to go to the Lakes District!
I am going camping at a campsite at Seatoller, near Borrowdale with a
few friends, and thought I'd extend the invite to UBES. Leaving on
Friday evening, returning on Monday, it should be a very cheap weekend -
just a bit of money towards petrol (I'll be driving there) and a bit for
food and camping.
There's some good looking scrambles around there, and a pub very close
to the campsite!
http://www.seatollerfarm.co.uk/camping.php
Let me know if you want to come asap!
Cheers

P.S. I explained to the doctor, "Whenever I harvest our cornfields, I
get a really bad headache."
"It's a migraine," he explained.

Italian?"

Subject: UBES summer climbing
Well if you went to any of the UBES lectures this year then you will
have met the Bristol climbing club, Red Rope. They have an evening
climbing program which means they go out every Tuesday and Thursday
evening to a crag near Bristol over the summer, and they have said they
are more than happy for us to go along with them. The only requirement
is that you can competently second or lead trad outdoors- they don't
want to take complete beginners.
Their evening climbing program can be found here
http://www.razzydo.co.uk/rrclimbing/index.html
and there are details about how to get in touch on their website. You
don't need to join to go along with them, just say you're from UBES.
They are a socialist climbing club, which may sound a bit odd, but
please don't let it put you off! Harry and I went to the Wye Valley with
a group of them last night and they were a really good group of guys-
really friendly and keen to climb, and a good laugh in the pub
afterwards. I'd definitely go again. The only socialist part was when it
came to sorting out petrol monies and since we're students we pay the
least- great!
Even if you have too much revision to go now, they're worth remembering
if you're going to be in Bristol over the Summer.
Anyway, happy climbing, revising and everything else,
love your very much STILL VICE PRES, who is clutching on to the last
days of power along with George..

Subject: UBES: Welsh 3000s (12-13th June)
It's the announcement you've all been waiting for:
UBES will once again be embarking on one of the toughest challenges UK
mountains can offer:
*The WELSH 3000s*
Looking ahead to after exams (yay!), the Welsh 3000s challenge will be
the weekend 12-13th June. It's a 30+ mile romp across Snowdonia,
taking all the summits above 3000 feet (914.4m). Completing it
generally takes 18 hours or more, as it's more than the length of a
marathon over rough terrain and features over 11000ft of height gain.
It's a well respected challenge, and earns you some fairly hefty
hardcore points.
We'd most likely camp at Gwern Gof Isaf/Uchef next to Llyn Ogwen on
Friday night, and drive round to Pen y Pass in the morning to start
the route. It'll take us the whole day, and we'd return to Bristol on
the Sunday after some well earned food, alcohol and sleep.
Email one of us if you're interested, and we'll have a pub session soon to
talk through the route, logistics, kit and fitness. If you'd like to
provide support for the challenge in the form of
picking-up/dropping-off while doing some climbing, or walking some of
the route, that would be great too.
Get Involved!

Vice-Pres: Clay Conlon
Treasurer: Mat Sav
Secretary: Izzy Nias
Expeditions Officers: Steve, Dylan & Alex
Climbing Officers: Will & Ross
Lash & Safety Officer: Chris Stafford
Social Sex: Louise & Johanna

Congratulations to you all, and a warm pat on the back to any who missed
out. As I cling to the last desperate clutches of power, I'd like to
remind you of the following things...
HIGHBURY VAULTS: WEDNESDAYs @ 9:30pm onwards...
Did Mat Sav get lucky in Windermere's finest club venue? Is Rob still
wearing his presidential boxers? Do Adam or Chris remember any of the
AGM? What does a wet naked Izzy draped in the Union Jack look like? All
your questions answered this and every Wednesday this term in the
Highbury Vaults.
CLIMBING
There are (probably) no more signups happening this term, so please use
the message boards at http://www.ubes.org/forum to plan your climbing
adventures. Feel free to turn up at Waterstones on Wednesdays at 1pm
like normal, but no guarantees you won't end up looking like a massive
loner.
SUMMER TRIPS
Ali has booked flights to Bulgaria, and encourages you to join him! If
you want to know anything about the UBES summer trip to this fabulous
mountainous country, or whether Ali can guarantee the pints will really
cost 30p, then please e-mail him at as7854@bristol.ac.uk right now.
And now that just leaves me to end with:
Gordon Brown has promised to keep one eye on the economy and one eye on
the immigration problem.
I can't help but notice a major flaw in your plan there Gordon.

well as a gossip after everyone's exciting easter exploits...
So we propose the following, keeping it simple so no dressing up, just
turn up and get druuunk...
WHERE? Wetherspoons on the triangle (standard...)
WHEN? this Friday (23/4)
WHAT TIME? 8pm
SO WE'RE JUST STAYING AT SPOONS...?!! No silly, then we'll go on to
Start the Bus at about 10.30 (or somewhere suitably cheap and fun)
So, if that tickles your fancy, as it should well do, then leave the

STOKE BISHOP PUB GOLF SOCIAL plus.... HOW TO BE ON THE COMMITTEE!
Thats right freshers, had enough of trekking into town for UBES fun? Well
this Tuesday, we're coming to you! To celebrate the end of term and the
start of revision season (ha), we're going to be doing the classic pub
golf challenge around all 6 Stokey B bars, and golfing attire is
compulsory (well sort of, you can come without if you must)! We will have
score cards prepared, which means for those of you that mightn't have done
this before you get a par for each drink at each bar in which you have to
drink your drink in (eg. pint of lager in 3 swigs) and whoever gets the
lowest score at the end wins. We'll (try to) head out into town somewhere
afterwards.
We'll be combining this with a very special one off premiere screening of
9 minutes of how-to-be-on-the-ubes-committee video, but more details will
follow on this shortly...
Details are...
WHEN? Tuesday 16th March
WHAT? Pub gold combined with next year committee information
WHERE?
7.50pm - Durdham, for video to start at 8 sharp, so be on time!
8:30 - Hiatt Baker
9:00 - UH
9:30 - Badock
10:00 - Churchill
10:30 - Wills
See you all there, freshers you have no excuse not to be there, and
everyone else loves a stokey b bar crawl, so no excuse for you either!!
Lots of social loving,
Cat and Cat xx

Subject: UBES: Newsletter
Every year, UBES produces a newsletter full of gossip, mockery, helpful
advice, hilarious articles and even a few pieces of real news. It is a
traditional time for the society secretary to gleefully dredge up scandal,
to search facebook for the worst photos ever and to battle with stupid MS
Word formatting.
I need your help!
Everyone is very welcome (and in fact often bribed, begged or threatened)
to contribute. Anything interesting, informative, amusing or just plain
weird will be much appreciated. Expect further nagging emails on this
subject.
I also need your help even if you don't want to contribute! This year I am
introducing a NEW FEATURE, called "UBES Member of the Year". This is how it
shall work: members of the society (you! now!) will email me your
nomination for the person that you think most embodies the meaning of being
a UBES-ster. This is not meant to be a popularity contest, so if your best
friend is in UBES but hates walking and whinges if they don't stay in a 5*
hotel, then maybe they're not the right person. Try and think of someone
who inspires you, who is enthusiastic and encouraging and loves the epic
outdoors (and a few pints afterwards).
When I have the nominations, I will publish them and call for a mass
society vote. The winner will be revealed in the 2010 Newsletter! The
suspense will be difficult to bear.
So right now your part in this is simple. If you can think of someone who
fits the prestigious "UBES member of the Year" title, then email me your
nominations! Remember not to reply-all, as that would defeat the shroud of
secrecy surrounding this new feature.
Much secretary love to you all,
Lizzie xx

Subject: UBES: Yorkshire Three Peaks SIGN-UP
I bring you details of an exciting new trip for this term! On the weekend
of 20/21st February, 24 budding expeditioners will attempt the Yorkshire
Three Peak Challenge.
The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a 25 mile, 5200ft ascent over three peaks in
the Yorkshire Dales - Pen-y-Ghent (691m), Whernside (728m) and Ingleborough
(723m).
The set up will be as usual. We'll leave on the Friday night (19th), stay
in a lovely bunkhouse, attempt the challenge on the Saturday, return for
food, fun and (alcoholic) refreshment and then probably do a lighter walk
on the Sunday before heading back. The bunkhouse is really nice, and it's
also right at the foot of the three peaks so very convienient.
It's going to be epic, but it's going to be hard. The route should take
around 12 hours and therefore headtorches will be needed, as well as
waterproofs and all the standard kit. This trip is open to all, but I'd
recommend a basic level of fitness before attempting 25 miles and three
fells, and it's maybe not one for a complete beginner.
Think you're tough enough? Want to be part of the 24 strong, epic team?
Sign-up at 1pm outside Waterstones THIS WEDNESDAY!
Any questions, email me (et5567) or Sam (sr6253) or come along to sign-up.
Much love to all,
Lizzie and Samuel xx

Don't want to wear the jumper your Gran knitted you for Christmas??
Can't afford the latest Berghaus fleece???
STOP right here because it's time to design the UBESwear for this year!
Before we get into the particulars of sizes, colours etc. we need a
snazzy design to go on the back, so get your drawing pencils out, or if
you're a techno whizz then open your CAD package, and get designing!
The front of the hoody will have the ubes logo on (you must have seen
plenty of us wearing them) but the back is completely free to be
re-designed. There are no particular requirements - anything that you
think is relevant and sums up who we are!
The winning design will earn it's creator a FREE garment with their
handiwork displayed.
Designs are acceptable in any format, on paper or on the computer.
The deadline is midnight of the 28th Jan (2 weeks today) so get
squiggling and YOUR design could go down in UBES history!!!

Fancy a weekend in the wilds of England, camping out under the stars,
walking to places that can't be reached in a mere day??
Well look no further... we are organising a backpacking trip to the Lake
District on the 4-6th December...
This will involve driving up and staying at a campsite on the Friday
night, before packing up our tents and heading out on a 2 day adventure,
camping out on the hills on the Saturday night and returning to Bristol
late on Sunday.
Spaces are limited and to come along you will need:
* A very cosy sleeping bag
* A rucksack large enough for overnight gear, clothes and food (60-70L)
* Good waterproofs to cope with everything the Lakes can throw at us
* A good level of fitness - we will be out on the hills for 2 days without
a sniff of civilisation so you need to be prepared!
If you fancy a challenge / a spot of training before Scotland, come along
to sign up at 1pm outside Waterstones on Wednesday...
Cost as ever is =A335... we will provide transport, tents, food and
stimulating conversation!
UBES love,
Hamish and Amy
P.S. As those who watch the news will know, there is a spot of wetness in=
=20
the Lakes at the moment... if this continues to be a problem by 2 weeks=20
time, we'll alter plans and scarper to Wales instead!

Subject: UBES: Decend on the gorge like an angry pack of bees ...
Hello,
Another one about the gorge this Wed. Basically I've had about as many
emails as stars in the sky asking to come down to the gorge on Wednesday
... which is great! Here's my cunning plan...
everyone who wants to get into climbing or who emailed me over the past
few days/weeks etc, even if I said in my last email that you should go to
the wall ... come along this Wednesday. The great thing is THE GORGE IS
FREE TO CLIMB IN ALL YEAR! So rather than this be a 'we teach you, and you
nod and pose some sort of quizzical look' lets change the ethos to, 'a
short intro to climbing outdoors' thus climbing as it should be... out in
the elements. Thus all we are doing is showing you as many of the cool
little nooks and crannies in our very own city crag that 2 years at uni
(albight predominantly studying of course) has taught.
Climbing is what you want it to be, so we can take a relaxed approch and
you decide what you want to know. For those who don't know this yet due to
lack of experience, just rock up and I'll talk at you for 3 hours so, by
the time its time we have to go you know a bit more about what you are
getting into. I might even print off a little flyer with some terminology
so you roughly know what I am talking about.
We'll set up as many top-ropes as possible (think UCR, rope attached at
top...) about 5ish ... to give some practise, or a taster of climbing real
rock.
A bit of bouldering, and possibly some sight seeing and spying out the
different crags in Avon. I'll bring some gear (climbing safty things) so
you can see how climbing fanatics make their sport safe(er).
Hopefully by the end you should have a rough idea of what climbing
involves to set you off on your own adventures. The gorge is about
10minutes cycle from the Stoke Bishop halls, so plenty of oppertunity this
year for freshers living there.
If at any point you have questions, accost myself, Ewan, George, Clay or
anyone else from the committee helping out. Until then...
Best
Harry

Subject: UBES: Teaching in the Gorge
Hello,
Following on from my previous email about Teaching climbing.
We've had a fair amount of interest, and the weather is looking good for
this Wednesday, so we'll be running a trip to the gorge. Those who wanted
to go to UCR, I'll see if I can run a session next Wednesday. If you want
to go to the wall on the 28th of October and still need teaching, I'll see
if I can find some more volunteers to teach you.
So people who have emailed me wanting to go to the gorge are:
Meelis
Gwilym
Heather
Sarah
Annika
Neha (can you do this wednesday?)
Claire
Jan
Tom Smith
Quirin
Tommy Curtis
Dan Cornish
Matthew
Christabel
If you didnt email me and still want to go to the gorge, you will probably
be able to come along, just give me an email before you do so.
The rest of you who emailed me, assume you are on for 'to be organised'
session next Wednesday in UCR, I'll confirm at a later date. Those who
could only do this wednesday @ wall, are welcome to come along to the
gorge - if you are worried about your level of experience, don't - we are
setting up top ropes - so it is effectivly the same as UCR.
We will meet @ ASS lib 1pm on Wednesday 28th, leave at 1:15 walk down to
the gorge, and end at around 4-4:30pm. If you have gear, bring it, if not
- adviseable footwear is tight fitting, grippy trainers, sans mud if
possible! Also non baggy trousers.
We will be doing top rope practise, and a bit of bouldering. If anyone is
interested in learning to lead or learn about shiney gear that climbers
use, give me a message and I can bring my rack down, its best if you know
what you are doing before learning this - but if you know the ropes we
could have a go at a route on sea walls if there is time...
All the best,
See you then

climbing wall in Bristol (UCR) ask that before you become a member (let
loose on your own without supervision) you need 2 sessions experience. So,
if you have been to one session at Undercover rock, or if you attended the
gorge day last week and still interested in taking up climbing as a hobby,
please email me. If you have no experience at all thats fine, but you
should probably learn the ropes indoors at UCR first.
I am thinking about running a teaching session in UCR and/or the gorge
next Wednesday or the following Wednesday. If interested please cover the
following information in your email:
1. Name
2. Previous experience (none at all?, outdoor?, UCR? - no of visits?)
3. Where you want teaching (UCR/Gorge)
4. Do you have any equipment? (harness, shoes?)
5. When would you want teaching (28th Oct, 4th Nov?)
6. Treats for your teachers? ... I mean it this time! :-)
As with the previous sessions, we will meet @ ASS lib at 1pm and walk to
the gorge and /or the wall on Wednesday.
Best

If you thought you had already been given a space and now find you don't I
apologise - we can't teach everyone at once. There should be another
session next week / weekend. Please keep checking your emails.
AVON GORGE DETAILS
Ewan Richards and other members of the committee will be waiting outside
the ASS library at 1pm. It is quite a long walk down to the gorge from
there, so come prepared with good shoes (walking boots) and any provisions
you deem necessary for the day - the route down to the cliffs is
surprisingly unstable. We will end around 5pm.
We will be climbing on top ropes (as in UCR) and bouldering around the Sea
Walls, New quarry areas. If you have climbing equipment please bring it
along, but this is optional. If you are already able to lead but lack a
partner feel free to bring your own gear and there may be a competent
second in our midst.
Any Questions please email me or Ewan.

Hello UBESlings Old and New,

Subject: UBES: Wednesday, (please read even if you think you have already)
Hello Again,
This follows on from the earlier email about climbing in the Avon Gorge
this Wednesday - (I apologise for people who are not interested and whose
inbox's are being filled! - in which case ignore).
///
From the replies I have had it appears we have a division between people
who want to go indoors to undercover rock ("UCR" - the climbing centre) and
those brave enough to venture into the gorge.
Therefore (and I apologise for those who have already emailed me!), please
could anyone interested please email me(again?) with:
1. Name
2. Member of UBES? (you need to be one - we can sort it out if you email
pronto)
3. UCR / Gorge
4. Equipment you already have (if you have any, eg harness, boots, helmet -
if not we can lend, but we have a limit...)
5. Consumables you intend to sweet talk us with :-)
This way i can make sure there are enough teachers etc.
////
Okay...
best

Subject: UBES: Outdoor climbing session @ Avon Gorge on Wed 12th
Hello All,
As many of you know UBES has just had a climbing introduction weekend at
Undercover rock climbing centre. If you attended I hope you enjoyed it and
picked up lots of tips to help you with your climbing ambissions. If not
we hope you have found your own way or become aquainted with the climbing
wall soon, it is a very good resource for cold and wet winter days.
This wednesday we are leading a similar session (top-roping and
introduction) but on real rock, in Bristol's very own Avon gorge. For
those of who don't know about it, the gorge is a very extensive area of
limestone, about a mile to the west of the Stoke Bishop University halls,
and is one of Britians top outdoor rock climbing venues.
If we get enough interest and the weather holds, members of the UBES
committe will be waiting at the usual place (outside the Arts and Social
Sciences lib) at around 1pm on Wednesday 14th to walk UBES members down to
'Sea Walls' - one of the crags in Avon.
Alternativly you could meet us there (although access is interesting) at 2pm.
Rough locality:

For more information, or if you are interested please email me
(ha7575@bristol.ac.uk) or Ewan (er5668@bristol.ac.uk) asap.

Alright muckers,
About time we get our society football going again. Sadly I couldn't
book a court for next week in the sports hall- being the start of term
people still have their new academic year resolutions to drop some
chubbiness picked up from a summer of sitting on the sofa in their
underwear playing halo. But we're all an intrepid bunch and rain-proof
(those with skin, at least), so I propose playing on the downs. The
forecast is currently good for Monday (skinless folk rejoice!) so we
could play early evening, say 5.30 to make sure we have some light? We
can play till we're tired or thirsty enough for a J2vodbull.
All abilities are accepted, especially crap people, because I kick the
ball like a granny after a hip operation. The benchmark of excellence is
usually set by our social sec Catstiano "Kakaldinho" Osborn, who will
probably turn up if she wasn't scouted by Bristol City over the summer.
Both sexes are welcome, nay, encouraged to turn up. Even if you don't
like football, turn up and cheerlead or eat your dinner whilst watching
some fine athletic prowess.
Oh yeah, meet on the park side of the water tower. In case there are
several groups up there I'll be wearing a Nottingham Forest shirt, and
there are only 12 of us in Bristol so you can't go wrong. Please bring
hilariously OTT goal celebrations.
hugs and kisses
Dylan
